South Shields

South Shields is a great choice for a relaxed day trip, particularly if you like beaches, coastal walks, history and traditional British seaside atmosphere. It sits at the mouth of the River Tyne.

The main attraction is Sandhaven Beach, a broad sandy beach with a promenade, cafés and plenty of space for walking or simply sitting by the sea. Nearby are the South Shields piers and Herd Groyne Lighthouse, making the seafront particularly scenic.

South Marine Park, a pleasant Victorian/Edwardian-style park beside the seafront. There is a boating lake, gardens, playgrounds and a miniature railway, making it particularly good for families.
