Burnby Hall Gardens & Museum

Enjoy a lovely day out to one of our new destinations Burnby Hall Gardens & Museum - located in the little town of Pocklington, York.

Enjoy a day trip to our new destination - Burnby Hall Gardens & Museum known as the 'Jewel in Yorkshire's Crown'.  Home to a National Collection of over eighty varieties of Hardy Water Lilies which bloom on the Upper and Lower Lakes between June and August.

The Gardens that you see are the result of decades of continuous work by the Stewarts Trust to maintain, enhance and develop the formal hall gardens originally created by Percy and Katharine Stewart.

The most eye-catching feature of these are the Upper and Lower Lakes which are home to over 100 varieties of Hardy Waterlily (Nymphaea) which flower between mid-June and the end of August. Designated a National Collection, the lilies were described as being set in the best natural setting in Europe by a visiting symposium in 1993.

The lakes are also home to thousands of Carp, Roach and Rudd which delight visitors of all ages during the spring and summer months.

They also have several formal gardens situated around the lakes.

The Gardens that you see (Aviary Garden, Walled Gardens, are the result of decades of continuous work by the Stewarts Trust to maintain, enhance and develop the formal hall gardens originally created by Percy and Katharine Stewart.

The Stewart Museum houses artefacts collected by Major Percy Stewart, an adventurer and traveller, who owned Burnby Hall and made eight world tours between 1906 and 1926.

The Stewart Museum is primarily dedicated to the travels of Major Percy Stewart and the eight World Tours he undertook between 1906 and 1926.

Often accompanied by his wife Katharine, Percy visited every continent, explored remote regions, and collected a remarkable range of cultural and religious exhibits. Several of these have been recognised by UNESCO as of national and international importance.

The Stewart Collection is now housed in state-of-the-art display cases in the museum with a number of interactive stations.

Also on site is The Lilypad Café offering a range of light meals, including sandwiches, toasties, platters, weekly specials and more, along with homemade traybakes and cakes.

They serve freshly ground coffee and a range of other hot and cold beverages, and also cater to gluten free and vegan dietary needs.

The café works on ‘wait to be seated’ and table service from friendly, welcoming staff and has plenty of inside and outside seating available.
