A trip to explore and see the history of the Roman Wall & Housesteads - We have been advised that The House Steads site can be difficult for people with mobility issues . We then continue to Hexham for the afternoon
Witness the stunning views, explore natural wilderness and become immersed in the history while visiting Hadrians Wall and Housesteads Fort.
Hadrian's Wall, an epic structure, kept the unwanted out and the welcome safe. Making use of the natural Whin Sill escarpment, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Roman Empires best-maintained outpost in northern Europe. Housesteads Roman Fort has a real insight into Roman military life and discover the past behind the archaeological remains, using the stone walls as a guide around the village south of the fort and envisage the different chambers and rooms. Plus, you might just see some of the oldest toilets around. Please be advised that the coach can only drop off at the Visitors centre and there will be a 10 minute walk uphill to the Fort itself. Housesteads site can be challenging for those with mobility issues. And while there are some paths, they can be steep and are rocky.
We then proceed for an afternoon visit to Hexham -home to the beautiful Sele Park, floral gardens in the town centre, and the stunning grounds of Hexham House. Beneath the charming market town, Hexham holds a bloody history of marauding Vikings, and Englands first purpose-built prison, Hexham Old Gaol, which can be traced back to the 1300s.
Hexham has an excellent range of independent shops to explore that are totally unique to the town.
